Cayo Granma Island
Cayo Granma Island
Cayo Granma, a fishermen's island with stilt houses in Santiago de Cuba's bay, accessible in 30 minutes by boat from Punta Gorda.
Cayo Granma, also known as Fishermen's Island, is a small islet located in the bay of Santiago de Cuba. Its wooden stilt houses and perched church make it a singular detour from the city center, about thirty minutes by shared boat.
Why visit Cayo Granma
The islet offers a striking contrast to the hustle and bustle of Santiago de Cuba. No hotels, no souvenir shops: just a fishing village with colorful houses set on the water, a few narrow streets, and a community life centered around the sea. Residents live primarily from fishing and tourist visits remain modest, which preserves the island's authentic atmosphere.
The crossing itself is part of the experience: from the boat, you can see the Castillo del Morro on its cliff, the fortified entrance to the bay, then the gradual emergence of the islet and its stilts.
What to see on the islet
The stilt village
Most of the dwellings are built of wood and rest on pilings that protect them from the tides. The facades, painted in pastel tones, border narrow streets where pedestrians are the main traffic. A complete walk around the islet takes less than an hour.
The Church of San Rafael
The Church of San Rafael sits at the highest point of Cayo Granma. The building is modest, but its location offers an unobstructed view over Santiago's bay, the village below, and the mountainous coast. It is typically the vantage point visitors choose to locate the islet within its surroundings.
The waterfront and fishermen
The docks and boats moored around the islet set the rhythm of daily life. Late morning and late afternoon bring visible fishing returns from the quays. Cayo Granma also has a few dining spots, including the Cayo Granma restaurant, which serves fish and seafood from local catches.
Practical information
- Duration of visit: plan for 2 to 3 hours on the islet, including lunch.
- Dining: dining options limited to a few establishments, including the Cayo Granma restaurant overlooking the bay.
- Boat fare: shared boat crossing remains very affordable, payable in Cuban pesos.
- What to bring: water, hat, comfortable shoes. No ATM or shops on the islet.
- Respect for the place: this is an inhabited village, not a developed tourist site. Ask permission before photographing residents.
How to get there
The islet is accessible only by boat. Shared boats depart from Marina Punta Gorda, south of Santiago de Cuba, and reach Cayo Granma in approximately thirty minutes. Services run regularly throughout the day, though frequency varies with demand and season.
To reach Punta Gorda from downtown Santiago de Cuba, allow about twenty minutes by shared or private taxi. It is also possible to charter a private boat from the marina for greater scheduling flexibility.
When to go
Santiago's climate is tropical, with temperatures ranging from 28 to 31°C throughout the year and sea temperatures between 26 and 30°C. The dry season, from December to April, remains most favorable for the crossing and exploration of the islet. The months of May, September, and October concentrate the heaviest rainfall and coincide with the most active period of the hurricane season: it is advisable to check the weather the morning of departure before boarding.
Nearby attractions
Cayo Granma combines easily with other sites in the bay and city:
- The Castillo del Morro, a UNESCO-listed fortress guarding the bay's entrance, visible from the crossing.
- The historic center of Santiago de Cuba, birthplace of Cuban trova and son music.
- Further west, the Bay of Pigs for diving and history enthusiasts.
- In the island's interior, the Che Guevara mausoleum and museum in Santa Clara complements a cultural itinerary.
