The richness of a journey lies not only in discovering new landscapes. It is also about meeting a people and experiencing their culture. And what better way to immerse yourself in a country's culture and its people than through traditional festivals and events? Discover the celebrations not to miss on a trip to Cuba.

The Festival del Fuego in Santiago de Cuba

Also known as the Caribbean Festival, the Festival del Fuego (Festival del Fuego in Spanish) is one of the most famous Cuban celebrations in the world and one of the most anticipated events in the country. Established in 1981, this festival offers a magnificent showcase of Caribbean culture, which is why it takes place in Santiago de Cuba, renowned as the cultural capital of the island.

For eight days, the Festival del Fuego celebrates the music, cuisine, dances, and traditions of Caribbean and Latin American peoples. The programme includes dance performances and salsa lessons and Afro-Cuban and Franco-Haitian dances, fireworks, theatrical performances, traditional crafts, poetry and performance workshops, conferences, film screenings, and street spectacles. While locals in the region begin preparing for the event as early as January, the Festival del Fuego takes place each year in early July. Not to be missed if you're in Cuba at that time!

Carnivals in Cuban provinces

Other popular celebrations in Cuba: the famous carnivals! These festivities take place in several provinces of the island including Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Pinar del Rio, Las Tunas, Holguín, Matanzas, and Villa Clara. However, the carnivals of Santiago de Cuba (the country's oldest carnival) and Havana are the most spectacular. During these festivities, which attract many Cubans and tourists, floats are decorated and dance troupes parade in colorful costumes. It's also an opportunity to discover the conga, a dance and music genre set to the rhythm of percussion instruments, and sample typical dishes!

Cuba's various carnivals do not take place on the same dates but generally begin from June onwards. The Santiago de Cuba festival runs throughout July, and the Havana carnival is celebrated in August.

The Christmas festival Las Parrandas in Remedios

If you're planning a trip to Cuba during the year-end holidays, don't miss the Christmas festival "Las Parrandas de Remedios". This traditional folk celebration has taken place every year since the 19th century, between December 16 and 26, in the peaceful town of Remedios. It is a friendly competition between residents of two neighborhoods: the Carmelitas from El Carmen district and the Sansaries from San Salvador district.

For nearly ten days, the two groups prepare and compete with elaborate parades, culminating in the famous "face-off" that takes place on the evening of December 24 on the town's main square. That evening, you can watch them parade on large floats and compete with dance choreography. You'll also be able to enjoy fireworks in an incredibly festive atmosphere!

The Festival del Habano in Havana

Who doesn't know the Habano, the famous Cuban cigar renowned worldwide? Each year, between late February and early March, a festival entirely dedicated to it takes place! The Habano cigar festival is held in Havana at the Palacio de Convenciones site to the west of Cuba's capital.

Visitors will have the opportunity to visit fairs and exhibitions, tour cigar factories, explore tobacco fields and plantations, attend seminars and tastings, learn hand-rolled cigar making through masterclasses, and attend cigar dinners where the tradition of auctioning beautiful art pieces continues. An event that will delight cigar enthusiasts and the curious alike!

The Fiesta a la Guantanamera in Guantánamo

Just like the Festival del Fuego, the Fiesta a la Guantanamera is a multicultural event not to be missed on a trip to Cuba. To experience it, head to the first days of December, to the southern city of Guantánamo. During the first four days of the final month of the year, residents celebrate the diversity of Cuban culture.

Indeed, the event aims to protect, preserve, and promote the richness of Cuba's cultural heritage and its many cultural influences. While each edition highlights a figure from popular culture, you'll find a variety of events each year including fairs and exhibitions, colloquia on Cuban music and cultural heritage, scientific activities, competitions, and lively nights!
