Nestled in a postcard-perfect setting, El Cayo Granma restaurant is far more than just a place to eat. It's an experience in itself. Perched on a small islet at the entrance to Santiago Bay, this establishment accessible only by boat offers a timeless escape—where Caribbean waters, culinary traditions, and local hospitality blend seamlessly. It's the ideal spot to disconnect from the world over lunch or dinner and embrace island tranquility.
A truly unique geographic location
El Cayo Granma restaurant sits on a peaceful small islet, right at the entrance to Santiago de Cuba Bay. Nestled in an exceptional marine setting, the establishment literally floats on the water, surrounded by Caribbean seas. From its wooden terraces, diners enjoy an unparalleled panorama of the colonial city, the Sierra Maestra mountains, and the iconic El Morro San Pedro de la Roca fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
An authentic, soothing ambiance
This restaurant captivates visitors with its distinctive wooden architecture from the 1940s and its exceptional waterfront location, literally built on stilts. Originally, this chalet-style building served as a country retreat for wealthy Santiago families. It was later converted into a restaurant and integrated into Cuba's tourism network in the 1990s, first through the Cubanacan group, then by Palmares.
Today, the venue retains all its charm: a warm, refreshing family atmosphere true to the spirit of Cuban paladares—those charming private restaurants run with genuine hospitality. The establishment spans three levels:
- A spacious main dining room on the ground floor accommodating 100 guests
- An upper floor with capacity for 50 diners
- A picturesque waterfront bar terrace, sheltered beneath a wooden structure, seating up to 70 additional guests.
The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between casual and refined, accompanied by Cuban rhythms and the gentle lap of waves. Visitors come for the food, certainly, but also to savor a moment of pure relaxation. Extremely popular with locals on weekends, the restaurant also welcomes numerous organized tour groups, often arranged through local agencies from Marina Marlin.
A menu celebrating fresh seafood
El Cayo restaurant is a must-visit destination for seafood lovers. Its kitchen celebrates local catches, prepared fresh daily, in simple yet flavorful recipes rooted in Cuban culinary traditions.
Among the most beloved dishes:
- Filete al Cayo (grilled fish fillet topped with shrimp and melted cheese)
- Lobster in criolla sauce
- Seafood rice
- Fried plantain and tropical salad
The menu also features select meat options, vegetarian choices, and an excellent selection of beverages: Cuban beers, classic cocktails like mojitos and piña coladas, and fresh fruit juices. Should you have specific preferences, the team will happily adapt to your tastes, even beyond seafood offerings.
Access to El Cayo Granma is exclusively by water, adding an adventurous element to your experience. Small motorboats or light shuttles run approximately every 1.5 hours, connecting multiple coastal neighborhoods—Punta Gorda, Caracoles, La Socapa, Ciudamar, and Marina Marlin. This short crossing, often by boat or lancha, allows you to immerse yourself in the bay's atmosphere. Along the way, passengers can admire the calm waters, houses perched on stilts, and Santiago's natural and historic treasures. Upon arrival at the islet, the restaurant awaits, ready to serve you a delightful meal with your feet practically in the water, in a quintessentially Cuban setting.
