Cayo Levisa

Cayo Levisa sits on Cuba's Atlantic coast. Most visitors come for a day trip from Viñales, which is about an hour's drive away. With its white sand and turquoise waters, Cayo Levisa has all the makings of a tropical island paradise.
Geographic Location
Part of the Colorados archipelago, Cayo Levisa lies roughly 7 km off Cuba's northern coast, covering a total area of 2.5 km². Along the island's northern coastline stretches approximately 4 km of beach blanketed in fine white sand, backed by a lush pine forest. From this vantage point, you can glimpse a magnificent coral reef. The southern section reveals dense mangrove forests that are difficult to access, along with marshlands that serve as breeding grounds for large fish species.
History
Cayo Levisa marked the departure point for Cuban immigrants heading to the United States. During the height of Fidel Castro's political influence, many islanders sought escape from the regime by any means available.
The island remains off-limits to all citizens of Cuban origin to this day.
A Day of Relaxation at Cayo Levisa
Cayo Levisa is among the sites that have been kept away from major tourist infrastructure. Most visitors spend just a day here from Viñales, but you can also rent one of the forty bungalows at the island's only beachfront hotel and soak in its serene, picturesque setting. A small excursion will reveal all its hidden dimensions. Equipment rentals are available through a watersports center on the island.
Biodiversity of Cayo Levisa
The site's true appeal lies in its rich fauna and coral ecosystems, combined with a balanced natural environment that will enchant diving enthusiasts. Cayo Levisa boasts one of the world's most spectacular coral reefs, home to over forty coral species.
Access is by ferry only. Boats depart from Palma Rubia, in Pinar del Rio province, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., leaving the island at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Palma Rubia is less than two hours' drive from Havana and roughly forty-five minutes to an hour from Viñales.
